The 2002 Annual Meeting of Association of Chinese Graduate Schools(ACGS）was held in Changsha from October 12 to 13 (Graduate School of National University of Defense Technology was responsible for the meeting). Vice Minister Zhou Ji of the Ministry of Education, Inspector Han Jianhua of the Department of Students, Academician Zhou Qifeng, Director of the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council, Deputy Director Wang Yajie, Deputy Director Li Jun, Directors of six divisions of the Academic Degrees Office and Deans or Executive Vice Deans of 56 graduate schools across China attended the meeting. Lieutenant General Wen Xisen, President of National University of Defense Technology, Major General Yu Qingji, Secretary General of Army Degree Committee, and Xu Yunzhao, Assistant Governor of Hunan Province, extended a warm welcome to all the leaders and representatives present at the conference and expressed their warm congratulations on the convening of the conference.

　　At the conference, Vice Minister Zhou Ji of the Ministry of Education made an important report on the leapfrog development of postgraduate education, quality of postgraduate training and reform and innovation of postgraduate education; Academician Zhou Qifeng, Director of Academic Degrees Office of the State Council, briefed the conference on the recent work of Academic Degrees Office of the State Council and its future vision; Director Sun Yegang of Academic Degrees Office of the State Council explained the report on "Innovation Project of Postgraduate Education"; the conference also centered on the report of Vice Minister Zhou Ji. The conference also started a lively discussion and conference speeches around the report of Vice Minister Zhou Ji. The meeting adopted the report of the Secretary General Han Qide on the annual work summary of the Joint Committee in 2001 and the statement of the main points of the work of the Joint Committee next year; the meeting agreed to accept the Graduate School of Harbin Engineering University and the Graduate School of Haihai University as the reserve members of the Joint Committee. During the meeting, the delegates visited some of the key laboratories of the university, and also organized a symposium on the selection method of excellent doctoral dissertations and the establishment of the editorial committee of China Graduate Student magazine.
